Acetyl chloride (CHCOCl) is a highly volatile, colorless, and corrosive fuming liquid belonging to the class of organic compounds called acyl halides. It possesses a distinctively strong, pungent, and suffocating odor. It is highly reactive and does not exist freely in nature because it reacts violently with moisture or water, rapidly hydrolyzing into acetic acid and toxic hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas, which forms white fuming mist in open air.
